Review: Fox’s ‘The Exorcist’ offers few jolts this time around

Horrifying. Oh, not Fox’s The Exorcist (Friday, 9 ET/PT, ** 1/2 out of four), which is more tedious than terrifying. No, I mean the current TV trend of rummaging through the intellectual-property garbage bin to see what might be available for recycling. Now and then the rehashing works, as with one of fall’s more entertaining premieres, Fox’s Lethal Weapon. But more often it gives us such irredeemable catastrophes as CBS’ Rush Hour — and too often, it just leaves us feeling swamped by the flood of old ideas. n just one season, we’re getting Frequency, Time After Time, Lethal Weapon and, Friday, MacGyver and this drama, joining remakes of The Odd Couple and Hawaii Five-0 and character-retrievals such as Gotham, Supergirl, Elementary, The Flash, Arrow, Lucifer, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Once Upon a Time. No doubt the only reason we’re not getting Night of the Living Dead is the networks fear it would be too on the nose. Read More
